Black board-and-batten siding outside, light oak and quiet Scandinavian calm inside. The kitchen, dining and living area is one open room with French doors onto a covered patio. The backyard is the reason to book: a hot tub, a fire pit ringed with Adirondack chairs, a hammock between two trees, hanging egg chairs and a turf lawn set up for bocce, cornhole, life-size checkers and Connect 4. String lights take over after dark.

The space

The home sits on a quiet street wrapped in black board-and-batten siding with cedar accents at the entry. Inside, the palette shifts to light oak cabinetry, warm neutral textiles and a Scandinavian-modern calm that runs through every room.

The open kitchen, dining and living area anchors the home. A marble-look waterfall island seats 6 under two bronze dome pendants, with a wine fridge, an induction cooktop and a fully stocked hidden appliance pantry behind bi-fold cabinet doors. The living room's oversized sectional faces a wall-mounted TV, and French doors open onto the covered patio.

The twin room has 2 upholstered twin beds, a leaning ladder desk and a full-length mirror, with windows over the side yard and the covered porch. One king suite has a four-poster bed, a sitting area, French doors onto the backyard and an ensuite bath with a freestanding soaking tub and a walk-in glass shower. The second king suite has its own kitchenette with a coffee maker, mini fridge, sink and small dining table, plus an ensuite bath with a walk-in shower, for guests who want some separation from the main home.

The backyard is where the home sets itself apart. A dining table seats 8 steps from the grill, with hanging egg chairs nearby. Past it are a private hot tub, a fire pit ringed with Adirondack chairs and a hammock strung between two trees. A dedicated turf lawn holds bocce ball, cornhole, life-size checkers and Connect 4, and the string lights take over once it gets dark.

A few notes

This is a quiet residential neighborhood, so no parties, loud gatherings or disturbances. Keep noise at a reasonable level during the day, and after 9pm no sound should carry beyond the property line. That is a City of Austin rule and we enforce it.

No smoking anywhere on the property. Children need an adult with them at the hot tub.

The neighborhood

Govalle, still its own thing.

Onyx and Oak sits in Govalle, one of East Austin's quieter and still changing pockets, under mature oak trees. It is close to the action without being in it.

Walk or bike to the coffee shops, taco trailers and neighborhood bars along Springdale and Airport. The Boggy Creek Greenbelt and Govalle Park are close by for a run or an afternoon outside. Downtown, the East 6th Street bars and Lady Bird Lake are a quick rideshare, near enough for a night out and far enough that you will sleep when you get back. Govalle keeps a balance a lot of East Austin has lost: still a little rough at the edges, still full of character, and increasingly home to the area's best new food and drink.

We had a wonderful experience at this home. It’s been Completely Remodeled and the finish-out is Very tastefully done. The flow of the house was great for our group, with plenty of privacy in the 3 bedrooms and a nice large open main area for us to spend time together. The owner equipped the house with some great technology features- the high tech toilets had us all laughing.. The back yard offered lots of things to do- swinging chairs, a hammock, games, hot tub, large dining table, etc- very tastefully done. We would easily stay here again. Also, we had a few things to mention to the owner and they were super responsive. ( If I sound like a Realtor, it’s because I am, and therefore I’m very particular and I pay attention to details!) Well done!
